Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones is 6ft 5nches tall and Paul Thorburn’s famous monster kick against Scotland in 1986 went 64.2 metres, but what do those measurements really look like when you stand next to them?
Ever wondered how you’d look if you could take your place in the Wales line-up for the anthems before a big game – well now you can find out for yourself.
FOR Cardiff has teamed up with the Welsh Rugby Union to create a series of installations around Cardiff city centre designed to give visitors and locals a flavour of what Welsh rugby means to the nation.
Two unique ‘selfie stations’ stand-out, which give supporters the opportunity to see how they measure up next to Wales’ 122-times capped captain Jones or put fans in the anthem line-up, and Thorburn’s famous kick is also mapped out on the pavement in one pedestrian only spot.
A variety of information points have also sprung up around town, reminding visitors of famous moments, milestones and achievements in Welsh rugby history – like Neil Jenkins’ world record points tally, ‘That try’ from Gareth Edwards and a celebration of the Women’s game.
The installations have been put in place in time for Wales’ first home game of the 2019 Guinness Six Nations Championship, against England, to give visitors a taste of the high esteem in which our national sport is held. They will remain in situ for Ireland’s Six Nations visit in March.
The selfie spots and information points can be found in multiple locations around the city, from near Queen Street to Mill Lane, around the St David’s Hall and arcade and at Cardiff central station. A WRU spokesperson said:
“We hope that fans from England, Ireland and Wales alike will enjoy the installations, we think there is something for everyone from selfie points to celebrations of our history and facts and stats about the game we all know and love”.
